Refugee fears prompt Congo talks
Fears are growing for the fate of more than 250,000 civilians forced to flee their homes by fierce fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
A ceasefire between government troops and rebels is holding but the situation is desperate, with chaotic scenes reported at aid distribution centres.
Families stormed one camp in Kibati as others tried to scale the walls.
Meanwhile, European diplomats have met Congolese President Joseph Kabila as part of efforts to end the crisis.
French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and his British counterpart David Miliband said they had urged the full implementation of existing peace agreements between Congo and neighbouring Rwanda, and the disarming of militias.

Skippy's in Germany!
JA!
I'm not lying!
You may be as baffled as I was when I first saw this headline in the newspaper but hold on a moment and let me explain. Hopefully things can begin to make sense, or if it doesn't don't worry.
A Kangaroo was seen last Monday night bounding his way about on the main street of Siegburg, Germany confusing local residents and passes by as they may have thought they were in the outback rather than their local sausage market.
All joking aside, the Kangaroo actually boxed it's way out of it's enclosure and decided to go for an afternoon stroll around the neighbourhood. Police and fire officers had to pursue a Kangaroo chase through the town, dodging emergency crews who tried to lure the strict herbivore with dog food. Firefighters later were fortunately able to capture the relative of Skippy with a net. The Australian marsupial was taken to the nearby vet and was checked over being declared unharmed. The Kangaroo was given a shelter to stay in, while efforts were made at trying to find it's owner.
Later the Kangaroo was claimed by it's owner, who kept two of the Australian marsupials – named Tequilla and Sunrise – as housepets.
Under Australian legislation it has been illegal to export live kangaroos or wallabies since 1982.
Police were checking with customs officials whether the kangaroos were legally imported.
The only reason I decided to post this story onto the blog was because, this blatantly is not your usual every day story. Then while I was finding this story incredibly humorous and fascinating I began to evaluate the story in closer detail. I had begun to think, was the Kangaroo trying to escape for a particular reason other than that it could smell next door's dinner? Maybe that they were being ill treated or that they were being kept in cruel confinement with no attention at all.
"What's that Skippy?"
"You're in trouble."

Celebrities and Politics
There has been a rising number of celebrities involving themselves in the political world. Some actors and actresses in the USA have decided to take it upon themselves to help represent those in the running for President.
What I don't understand is what most go through these people's minds when they decide to involve themselves in something they are best to stay away from. Many of these celebrities are role models for young and old people alike, and if somebody sees their favourite actor or actress is 'Voting for Obama!' then they might just 'Vote for Obama!' too.
I don't think they see the influence they have over people, because it is a major one.
Yes, you can support somebody in the running. Yes, you can be as interested in politics as you like. But it is when they involve themselves in it, it aggravates me. Either they are very naive or completely understand what they are doing.

"Are we all going to die next Wednesday?"
If you take a look at page 15 in the Daily Mail last Thursday (04.09.8) you would see the words “Are we all going to die next Wednesday?” written in big letters and a picture that looked like a black hole.
At first, I did not bother to read the article, but when my host sister saw this, she asked with an anxious voice: “Are we actually going to die?” I had to see what this was.
300ft under the Swiss-French border, near Geneva, CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) has built an 18 mile long train- sized tunnel. They are going to (hopefully) reveal the secrets of the atom, the forces and the particles that make up our universe.
The reason for the headline is that a few people think that there is a small chance that the experiment will cause the making of a mini-black hole, which will swallow the Earth. That is scenario one. The second scenario is that the experiment will cause a chain reaction in the fabric of space and time, and that it will rip apart the entire universe.
I think that by using that headline and that picture, the author of the article managed to get people interested. The problem is that kids, like my host sister, misinterpret it and that made them scared. I assume that the author’s intentions were to tell us how absurd the scenarios are, not to scare us.
In my opinion this is a great example for how the media has got the possibility to misguide and shape us.
However, I think I will keep my fingers crossed on Wednesday, just to be sure.

Not pretty enough
I recently read an article on internet that really shocked me. The article was about the opening ceremony of the olympic games in Beijing. Under the ceremony, that we saw on tv, a little girl was singing a Chinese song, and her voice was just amazing. But in the article that I read on internet, was it standing that the girl that we saw on tv, didn't "own" the voice. The girl we saw was just mimeing the song. The truth was that the leaders of the ceremony didn't think the girl that had the most beautiful voice and won the audition, was pretty enough to join the opening ceremony, so they found a girl that they thought was more pretty, and they let her "sing" in the ceremony.
As I wrote before, did this really shock me, because I don't think this is the way it should be. I mean (and I'm sure many others also do) that it's not the way you look that matter, but how you are inside.

Advert to stop knife crime
An advert made to shock teenagers out of their minds about the growing fact of knife crime and carrying knifes is being released to somehow stop teenagers from using knifes as a act of defence.
With the rising amount of gang crime within youngsters and the trauma of the result of a knife being carried then being used for attack brings the police and government to the conclusion of having to 'Do something'.
The question is will an advert made to shock really work? With the advert only being shown to pupils in schools and not being broad casted on to Tv sets in the home you can't help to think if this advert will be hitting the minds of the right people.
I think that the advert Will make teenagers involved in gangs think about what they are doing before they act. However i think that maybe the advert won't be reaching the right cultures and community's that it needs to. I don't think that the threat of harsher consequences contained in the advert if caught with carrying a knife is really going to bother the minds of the people who are set out to possibly harm people.
Overall i think that the advert is a good idea but i think it could be changed to something that will be more effective in the long term.

Two million workers 'exploited'
I recently read a news article that informed me that up to two million workers in Britain are at risk of exploitation due to their social class and work status. Research has found that some employees are being paid £1 per hour working 70 hours a week and some are even facing sexual abuse! I think everyone should work in a safe environment and be paid a fair price, so this article shocked me, especially the part about the sexual abuse, as being an employee myself i just presume my work place is a safe place to be and didn't think anything like that could happen until i read this article.
The union body has described this situation as a 'national scandal' and the Government has said that it was boosting penalties for rouge employers. The setting up of a special Fair Employment Commission to enforce workers rights has been made aware to the public work force through a campaign. This is a very serious matter and action is being taken. Penalties are being boosted and enforced and the amount of agency inspectors to investigate abuse is being doubled. The new regulations also ensure that employers couldn't unfairly deduct accommodation and other expenses from peoples wages.
I believe these regulations must be increased and brought out quickly as this is a very unfair and serious matter.

Arabian Stunner
As you may all have already heard, Arabian billionaire Suleiman al-Fahim, took the reins from Shinawatra at the board for Manchester City Football Club. Now thats good that Man City finally sorted their finacial status after Shinawatra screwed everything up for them what his fraud and so forth, but having an Emirati billionaire is just insane. It just shows you that Man City are so despeerate for silverware, or even just recognition in the footballing world that they would employ walking bank as chairman. I am starting to see a pattern in english football; I mean it's just like when man Utd were taken over by American millionaire Malcolm Glazer. He had absolutely no clue about football, yet he stayed on. That or Chelsea's Roman Abramovic. This is certainly worrying me personally as a football fan. What will become of football in 25 years? Will they forget about the football completely?
Clean up your act FA or football's gonna go to pot!

Revolution
Now I know this may seem like a fairly strange topic but this is what I was reading about in thte Gaurdian, basically women don't have a very high sucess chance of getting a high postion in a job. Due to being able to bear children, and thus maternity leave, which costs employers lots of money. As Sir Alan Sugar has announced that he wants to ask women at interviews, "Are you planning to get married and have children?" But laws forbid this, giving an easy option to buisnesses, don't employ women who could, well that means any female between the ages of 16 and 55, most of a woman's working life.
Well isn't that great news for women, that and the fact that women still have to work more to get more money, not in all jobs but in many. Now I know that may seem a bit strange seeing as there have been several ampaigns to get equality between women and men, but let's face it, chances of that happening are pretty slim. We'd need a revolution or a war, because they change society, but then you can't really forsee what happens after such events.
The reason for women being so low regarded, no point arguing; it's still like that, is because of the type of society we have (I'm not sure what it's called) but basically there are tribes somewhere in the world where the women live as a large group together and then only meet up with men at certain times in the year, for breeding (so to say), then if the child is male they will have to make their own way in the world, when they are no longer looked after by thier mothers. It works better than what we have, lots of men in big groups who argure and fight for who has the most. After all that was what it was like when we were still living in caves. Men went to hunt in on their own or in groups of no more than 3, and women stayed together, collected berries and managed to keep everything in order by communicating properly and making sure that everybody had a say.
Now can you imagine how the world woulld be if all the leaders were women.

'I now pronounce you monkey and wife'
I saw this headline and picture and found it rather odd,
Two monkeys in a zoo in china have got married.
The pair were married for publicity, to get more visitors to the zoo.
They also had their own outfits, dress and suit and everything.
The same zoo had to stop one of their events which was the animal olympics
bacuse of animal welfare issuses,
this made me wonder why this hadn't been talked about as much.
they didn't look that happy, its unfair on the animals.
You are meant to look after animals in a zoo
not play dolls with with, to create more visitiors.
Zoo's are meant to help animals to care for them, and i think that this is
ubusing the right to keep the animals locked up anyway.
what are you thoughts?

Sex killer that "could not be stopped"....hmmm?
So, it's common knowlage that the prison systems are in havoc due to the amount of criminals and the lack of space. One of the goverments quick fix solutions are the increased use of electronic tags and injunctions. This is fine in some situations and can work; but, obviously, not all cases can be so simply solved.
An example of this in the recent news (and there are many, it's becoing less and less uncommon) is that of heroin addict, David Summers, aged 23, and his victim; mother of 3, Diane Edwards, aged 53. The couple had a non-commital relationship which lasted only a few monts before Edwards ended it in January 2006. After ignoing her instantsies that the relationship was over, Summers was handedand injunction which he promptly broke. Surely this should have rung alarm bells? This man was obviously disconcerned with the consiquences he would face from the law; the polices concerns should not have been "punshing" him with a suspended sentence, bu t the safety of Diane who was being constantly harrassed and terrorise by this man! It did not take a lot for Summers to remove his electronic tag and pay one last visit to the home of Diane Edwards.
After the savage killing, MAPPA (the multi-agency management scheme for violent offenders) published a reveiw stating that "Summers had no regard for the law". It's fair enough to say it now, but surely this was obvious long before Edwards was killed; before 3 children were left5 without a mother. MAPPA have now said to be tightening up its policies. Did it really take another event such as this one for things to be improved? no!

Raising the school leaving age
Children starting year 7 will be the first to be legally required to stay in education until they are 17. It is the first stage of a two-part reform, which will see the school leaving age raised to 18 for pupils now aged nine and starting Year Five. I see why this could be a good idea because it will get more people educated at a higher level, and more people may then end up getting better jobs and more money. However I think at the age of 16 pupils are old enough to make their own choices on what they want to do.
Secondly if someone does not want to stay on in education after 16 but they are made to they may just not bother trying, and may have an "anti-school" behaviour and disrupt others from learning. This will mean those who don't want to learn probably won't do very well, and will be wasting the teachers time for trying to help them. Also they will be wasting their own time in which they could be finding jobs for themselves and earning money. Another problem is sixth forms and colleges will end up being overcrowded so less attention will be spent on the individuals.
Also we still need people in lower skilled jobs, and as people will be carrying on education to a higher age more people may aim for higher skilled jobs so there will be too much competition for those type of jobs and not enough people for lower skilled jobs. Therefore I think this is not a good idea and will not work out very well.

Hotel forced to apologise after it refused wounded British soldier a hotel room 'because he was in the Army'
I found this article on the daily mail website, detailing how the metro hotel in Woking refused a British solidier a room. The wounded Soldier who had recently served OUR COUNTRY in Afghanistan, was told that it "was not company policy to allow Armed Forces personnel to stay at the hotel." I feel, this clearly shows how little respect we have for soldiers who serve our country, risking their lives to protect us and their families. People who serve our country should be treated as 'royalty' and should gain the respect of our society that they deserve. It seems that Britain feel no need to treat our soldiers like 'heroes' because they are to 'stuck up' to do so. However, in America each soldier is labelled as a hero, get applauded wherever they go, maybe Britain should 'take notes' and actually realise what they go through to save our country.
As stated in the article i read, if the hotel was turning down muslim or mixed raced people, it would immidiatley be labelled as 'discrimnation' and this will be where the law would take action. Whereas, a soldier getting turned down for a hotel room get the mere "forced apology."

Can I just a rant?
Well, I had already written part of this, but i've had to start again because the computer died, ( je suis not happy)
Anyway, I was reading one of the posts about how crime rates have gone up, and i was really annoyed and, well, i'd like to say suprised but i really wasn't. The government have recently introduced a new scheme of funding inmates who are being released. I'll explain it to you. Basically, inmates who have been granted shortened sentences, or are just due to be realeased because its the end of their sentence anyway, all of whom are also in the low level petty crime catogory (including buglary, antisocial behaviour, and drunk and disorderly charges) are being released at the end of their sentances with £1000 grants for rehabilitation, (living costs and so on) though the thing that baffles me is, what impression is this really giving to the inmates, a lot of whom are cronic reoffenders, and a considerable percentage usually only commiting the crime to fund a habit anyway. So what? Give them £1000 to waste on drugs or drink for a week or two, until they have to start stealing again to get more money, and end up back in prison.
Gahhh! Its a shambles!!
(rant one over =)
and this isnt really a rant, but the case on the news of the mansion that got burnt down. I know they found out it was the Dad (I think thats right?) but i still find it really hard to wrap my head around it. My imediate reaction when the case was released to the news was mainly just... well i jsut thought the family were on holiday, and someone had set teh house alight purposly, but then obviously there where the other out-buildings that were burnt too, so I realised it was very well planned. Until i then heard that the daughter had been talking to her friends something like 4 hours before the fire started, which then made me look it up more, obviously reavealing there was more to the story, i.e the debt side of things, and then obviously we found out who did it. But still, it makes it hard to believe, and in mind you kind of go throught he scenarios like, why didnt he just sell the house or animals, as that was where the money was, but still, you never know a persons situation, its jsut a sad story that one.
(that wasnt such a rant, more of a ramble, anywho, thats over now =)
ah, but oh my goodness! Boris Johnson at the olympics ceremonies! ARGH! What can I say? We seemed to just fail from teh start with the olympics. They brought out the video, and logo for it, and it gave people seizures or something, FAIL! So then after all that had died down, we went and did Beijing, and did really well, and then it gets to Boris Johnson. China are greeted at the handover ceremony, by and over grown school boy, who borrowed his big brothers suite with extra big pockets, great for burrying hands in, and acidently fell head first into a bucket of bleach, (is that hair real) personally, i was not impressed with dear Boris, who didnt seem to know what he was doing and was more excited about waving to his grandmother, or whoever it was he couldnt possible give a tasteful wave too. Well yes, after that embarressment, we then go to the bus driving round the stadium, and there was me thinking, hmm, it seems to be going quite well... until some kind of golden zebedee/leona lewis thing started to potrude from top of it, shortly followed by an old bloke, oh golly my mistake, Jimmy Page who enjoys screwing up his face and playing the guitar for a living, (its a good job he can actually play well otherwise i would of had to write at least another paragraph) and personally, wasnt loving their version of the Led Zep song. So yes, my theory is, the London olympics may very well FAIL. But lets hope not :)
Yeah, so i think I'm pretty much done now. Oh apart from: Gutted DJ Grooverider who got caught for carrying drugs and imprisioned in Dubai. Hugs not Drugs right! :)
All done now

Labour has been accused of pushing dangerous criminals back on the street
I found this article about offenders commiting more crimes after being released from jail.
Latest figures show that the number of crimes commited by serial offenders who have just left prison or begun a communtity punishment have lept to more than half a million a year. The proportion of juvenile criminals who were reconvicted rose year by year. The goverment has missed it's target by cutting numbers by 5% from 2000-2006. It has been suggested that this is due to lenient punishment. Therefore I think that criminals may be more likely to re-offend as the punishment is not harsh enough creating more people who think they can get away with commiting crimes. Labour policies were warned by Britain's most senier police officers that it had undermined confidence in the criminal justice system. Mike Fuller, chief constable of Kent police warned criminals were actually avoiding jail or being freed earlier because of the shortage of prison places. This will make more people commit crimes as they think they have less chance of being punished. Consequently this will make criminal offences rise and create more innocent victums.
' I'm Not Okay ' about The Daily Mail
I found an article from The Daily Mail claiming that a teenage girl Hannah Bond, had killed herself after becoming an 'Emo'. The article states that 'Emo' is characterised by depression, self injury and suicide and bands such as My Chemical Romance encourage and glamorise such behaviour. It blames My Chemical Romance by labelling them a 'suicide cult band' when in actual fact My Chemical Romance are against self-harm as front man Gerard Way said in response to these claims 'My Chemical Romance are and always have been vocally anti-violence and anti-suicide.' The Daily Mail suggests 'The Black Parade' was influential in Hannah's death due to its angst filled lyrics and melancholy themes. The Daily Mail has taken this album out of context, the actual themes being hope and courage. My Chemical Romance are just the latest of the medias scapegoat for the problems of younger generations. 'Emo' is not a new evil 'suicide cult' encouraging teenagers to commit horrific violent acts, previously the likes of Marilyn Manson and Ozzy Osbourne were blamed for the same thing. Society should be looking at the real reasons why teenagers are depressed, self harm and commit suicide.
Our UK Forces trained on a Videogame
So, here is something...
Our Troops are being trained by having simulations on a computer. Fair enough, right? They do that with the shooting. However this one is more like a videogame, not a simulation. Of course the MoD want troops to think of War as fun, so they go into war with that mind set... But Videogames are for no-life teenagers who sit there day and night talking to some random 'girl' from Finland. They should create realtime scenarios for these troops like they used to, and get them active. Im not going to start my Army fitness plan if all im going to do is sit there and play a computer game, whats the point?
I can understand that it is a good way to train troops for Iraq or whatever without actually going there, but its just a waste when your expected to be so fit and then your plonked in front of a computer. I think anyone would want to do it on a computer than a scenario, but not everyone is in the army and a computer is not reality. Those troops are going to be facing reality, not that you can get shot a dozen times and just pop back into the game for another try, there is no second chance on the battlefield.
All im saying is, why change the training routine? If the Militarys phrase is Be the Best they obviously dont need to change the training scheme if it was worked in the past. All these computers they want to run will contribute to all this global warming nonsense, and waste energy and such. Throw them back into the forest with paintball guns and proper kit.... Not on a silly machine that lets them get it easy. The Army is far from Easy.

Tories criticise Labour on poverty action
The shadow chancellor George Osbourne has claimed that the Conservatives would be much better at tackling poverty in the UK than Labour and that Labour reforms haven't gone far enough to end poverty during their term in office so far. Angela Eagle from the Tresury has reposnded by highlighting the Tories flagship ideas on inheritance tax, a policy she claims "punishes the middle earning population and rewards the top percentage of the rich". She was also quick to highlight the unreliability of relative poverty statistics, something that Sociology students in year 11 will be considering this autumn!

Boris Johnson
I was channel hopping over half term and came across BBC Parliament showing recorded footage of Boris Johnson's first 'Mayor's questions'. It was like an episode of Have I got news for you at times, with him making quips and jokes as well as occasionally giving sensible answers! The clip above shows this 'unique' style in full effect!
